A professional diver Willem tested one of the first diamond recovery pumps on the West Coast in the early 1970s. He has prospected and recovered diamonds on 8 shallow diamond concessions on the West Coast and operated his own diamond recovery vessel on the 7A shallow water concession adjacent to the 7B mid-water area where he first realized the important diamond distributary role of paleo channels. Between operating on different concession areas, he also worked as a journalist at several mainstream newspapers in south Africa.
